The pane films overnight. The small vents in the frame get closed because wet glass is treated as heat leaking out. The room stays sealed. Breath and cooking still go in. The cold glass does the drying the vent was meant to do.
Trickle vents are a thin path. They are not an open window in January. I shut ours in October to keep the new heat in. By week two every bedroom pane had a rag of water on the sill. I had not cracked the vent. I had not moved the wardrobe off that wall.

The closed slider is the first seal
The slider is what you can reach. Wet glass looks like money leaving. So the slot clicks shut. That helps in a storm when rain drives at the head of the frame. It hurts on a still cold night when four people sleep and the slot is the only planned path.
Breath, a rack, a vent that was never there
A wardrobe flush to the cold wall films behind it even with vents open. Pull the furniture. The vent cannot reach a pocket of air you sealed with chipboard.
Houses with no trickle vents need another path. Shutting a slot you do not have is not the job. A short open window after cooking is.
New frames sometimes ship with the sliders closed. The first autumn is when you notice. Check they move before you blame the boiler.
A room that sleeps three films faster than a spare room. The spare can keep the slider shut. The triple room cannot steal that rule.
Fish tanks and wet clothes add a load the slot was not sized for. Drop the extra load or add a machine that wrings air. Do not expect a thumb of vent to drink a rack.

Kitchens and baths dump more water than a bedroom. If those doors stay open and the vents in the bedrooms are shut, the water walks down the hall and sits on the coldest pane.
After a shower the bath fan is the first dump. If that fan dies with the light, the wet air walks. Opening bedroom sliders will not beat a bath that never cleared. Clear the bath first.
A dehumidifier in a sealed room will wring the air the vent would have swapped. Use it if the outside air is wetter than the room. Opening the slider into fog does little. Closing it into a dry frost and then running no path at all films the glass.
Black dots on the seal are older water. A cloth on the pane each morning without opening the slot is how the dots spread. The slider is cheaper than paint.
A night latch is not the slider
The lock at the bottom can stay shut for security. The trickle slot at the head is a different hole. Locking the sash and closing the slot is two seals. One can stay. Both together on a full bedroom is October.
Single glass still films with the slot open
Single glazing gets colder than a double pane in the same air. The slot can be open and that old glass will still mist on a hard frost. That is the pane, not a vent you failed to close. Do not shut the slider to punish glass that cannot hold the indoor temperature. Wipe, and accept a film on those mornings, or add a machine that wrings air.
A new sealed unit that still floods the sill with the slider open is a failed seal or a room with too much water. Then the vent is already doing its small job and the load is the rest.
October frames
October I wanted the heat to stay. The sliders went across. The sills went wet. I opened the slots a thumb. The film dropped on the milder nights. The coldest mornings still mist a little even with the slot open. That is glass temperature, not a reason to shut the vent again.
I used to wipe the sill and call it done. The rag was the daily proof the slot was still closed. Opening it ended the rag more honestly than a thicker towel.
I still close them in driving rain. I open them when the heat is on and the house is full.

Leave the slider shut in a storm that hits the head of the frame, or when the room is empty for days. Open it when people sleep there and the heat is running.
Skip another heater when the pane only films after you closed the slots. The extra mark cooks more air against the same sealed glass.
Open the slider before you buy another heater
Turn the slider. Pull furniture off the cold wall. Keep the bath door from feeding the bedroom. Then decide if the glass still needs a cloth every morning.
The October slots sit open a thumb. The rag on the sill is rarer. The heat did not require a sealed frame.
