Radiator Stays Cold at the Top After You Turn It Up

The room is slow to warm. The thermostat goes up because a cold panel is treated as a house that asked for more fire. The bottom of the radiator gets hot. The top stays cool. Air is still sitting in the last fins.

A radiator needs water in the whole panel. Air rises and leaves a cold band at the top. Turning the dial does not vent that band. I did that every November evening. The boiler ran. The wall behind the sofa stayed a cold stripe. The lockshield had not been the first story. The bleed nipple had.

The dial is the first reach

The thermostat is the object with numbers. A cold room looks like a low number. So the number goes up. That move is right when every panel is hot from top to bottom and the house still loses heat at the windows. It is wrong when one panel is hot only at the pipe and cold at the crown.

Should you never touch the dial? No. A truly cold night needs more set point. Feel the panel first. A cold top with a hot bottom is not asking for another degree. It is asking for a way out for the air.

Why the dial first? Because it is on the wall at hand height. The bleed nipple is a small square at the end of the panel. People live a whole winter without naming it.

Air sits at the top

Water cannot occupy the same space as a pocket of air. The pocket rises. The top fins stay cool. The boiler then works longer to chase a room that one panel is not serving.

Is every cool room air in a radiator? No. A closed valve on the panel, a boiler that never fires, and a blocked flue path are different mornings. A hot pipe and a cold crown on one panel is the air morning.

November on that wall

November I kept lifting the dial because the TV wall never lost its chill. The panel nearest the chair was scalding at the inlet and mild at the top. I put a towel down, opened the nipple a sliver, and air came before water. After the water showed, I shut it. That panel evened out. The extra two degrees on the thermostat had been the louder job.

I still raise the dial on a hard frost. I do not raise it for a stripe I can feel with one hand on the crown.

A cold top that is not air

If no air comes and the crown stays cold, the valve may be shut or the system may be low on water. Adding air-vent theatre on a closed valve does nothing. If you cannot tell those apart, stop.

A panel that leaks at the nipple after a bleed needs the cap shut and a cloth. Do not leave it dripping as a plan.

Should a cold top always mean a new boiler? No. Air in one panel is this afternoon. A boiler that never heats any panel is a visit. Mixing those into one call is how November lost the evening.

Bleed a little, then wait

Feel top and bottom. If the bottom is hot and the top is not, use the nipple key on that panel only. A towel first. A sliver of a turn. Air, then a bead of water, then shut. Do not open it like a tap.

If you have no key, or the nipple will not move, leave it. A rounded nipple is a new job on top of the air.

The thermostat is back where it was before the panic. The stripe on the wall is gone. That is one panel and one November. It does not prove every cold room is air. It does prove the extra degrees were the louder job. Feel the crown before you chase the dial.
