The wardrobe goes tight to the wall because a gap looks unfinished. Black specks show when you next pull it. The cold wall never saw air. The first fix dressed the room. It hid a wet stripe.
An outside wall runs colder than the room. Furniture flush to that wall makes a still pocket. I pushed ours in October after we painted. In December the skirting behind it was speckled. I had not left a hand of space. I had not felt the wall before the unit went back.

The flush back is the first shove
The flush line is what the eye wants. A gap looks like a job not done. So the unit kisses the plaster. That helps on an inside wall that stays near room heat. It hurts on the wall that faces the street.
Outside wall, a painted stripe, a room that already films
Feel the plaster before you shove. If it is colder than the room, that is the wall that needs the gap. Paint over specks and shove again is how December repeats.
A bed head on the same outside wall does the same pocket at pillow height. Pull the frame the same hand. The wardrobe is only the large version.
A mattress stood on its side against the cold wall while a room is painted will wet the paper in a week. So will a spare bed stored flush in the unused room you just closed. That spare room is not empty air. It is a cold pocket with a large soft face. Leave the same hand, or store the spare on an inside wall.
Carpet to the skirting behind a flush unit stays wet longer than the open floor. Vacuum that strip when you next pull the unit. The specks start there.
If the room already films the glass, the pocket behind furniture is the next place the water sits. Opening a trickle vent will not reach a cavity you sealed with chipboard. The gap and the vent are two jobs.
Inside walls can take a flush unit. Do not invent a gap on a warm partition and then complain the room shrank. The shove is wrong only on the cold face.
A dehumidifier in the middle of the room will not dry a stripe you cannot see. Pull the unit. Wipe. Leave the gap. Then the machine has a chance.
Legs, a plinth, a corner of two cold walls
A unit on legs lets a little air under. A boxed plinth against the skirting seals the bottom as well as the back. Lift or pack the plinth off the cold wall, or pull the whole carcass. Legs are not a reason to kiss the plaster.
A corner where two outside walls meet is the coldest pocket. A tall unit in that corner is a sealed chimney of wet air. Leave the gap on both faces or put the unit on an inside wall.
Drawers flush under a window board film the back of the drawer. You notice when socks smell. The same hand of space applies. Do not line the back with paper and call it finished. Paper holds the wet.
If the wall is wet to the touch in a line from a leak, furniture is not the first cause. Stop shoving units onto a stain that grows after rain. That stain is outside water. The gap will not fix a failed gutter.
Mould on the inside of the wardrobe doors is often clothes that went in damp. Pulling the unit off the wall will not dry a wet coat.
October paint
October I wanted the paint to look finished. The wardrobe hid a wet week behind it. December I pulled it, washed the specks, left four fingers. The stripe did not come back that winter. The room looked less flush. The wall stayed ordinary.
I used to wipe the specks and push back the same night. The cloth was theatre. The pocket rebuilt the stripe. The gap had to stay while the wall dried.
I still hate the gap. I leave it on the street wall. I push tight on the chimney breast that stays warm.

Leave the unit flush on a warm inside wall. Leave a hand on the cold outside face, under a window, or where the pane already films.
Skip a new wardrobe when the old back is only stained from a pocket. The unit was not the mould. The missing air was.
Leave a hand before you buy another unit
Pull the unit. Look at the wall and the skirting. Clean what you find. Leave a hand if that wall is the cold one. Then decide if the room needs a machine.
The October paint is still there. The specks are not. The gap is ugly and dry.
