The cycle ends and the towels are still heavy. The screen comes out and looks grey, so it gets pulled and tapped. The next cycle is longer. The air that should leave the box is still stuck in the hose.
A dryer is a drum, a heater, and a path out. Lint on the screen is the part you can hold. Lint in the hose is the part that actually throttles the job. I cleaned the screen every load for a month and still ran two cycles on the same sheets. The flap on the outside barely moved.

The screen is the easy door
The machine tells you to empty the screen. That sentence is true and incomplete. A packed screen will cook a load and smell like heat. A clear screen with a packed hose will do the same thing more slowly. From the laundry chair the story is always the screen, because that is the door that opens without tools.
Should you stop cleaning the screen? No. That wipe is still the first thirty seconds. It is not proof the path is open. A screen that looks clean after a thick towel load can still leave a felt in the elbow behind the machine.
Why the screen first? Because it clicks out. The hose sits against a wall. People add twenty minutes. They do not pull the box.
Air has to leave the box
Wet cloth gives water to hot air. That air has to go through the screen, through the hose, and out of the house. If the hose is crushed behind the machine, or the outside flap is painted shut, the drum keeps tumbling in its own steam. The heater then runs longer because the wet bulb in the machine never drops.
A crushed rib in a plastic hose is a common one in a tight cupboard. You will not see it from the door. You feel it when you pull the box forward and the hose stays folded.
A long hose with two extra elbows collects felt in the turns. Short and straight dries faster than a pretty run along the skirting. The flap outside either kicks when the machine runs, or it does not.
Is every long dry a hose? No. A huge wet load, or a cold garage, will run long with a clear path. So will a dying heater. Those are different mornings. A clear screen and a dead flap on a normal load is the hose morning.
Saturday sheets
Saturday I did the sheets and the guest towels. The screen came out with a thin film. I tapped it. The cycle I added still left a damp band in the middle of the pile. I stood outside. The flap on the brick did not lift. The machine was loud. The house was not getting that air.
I pulled the box. The hose was a U behind the plinth, grey inside the first bend. After that bend cleared, the flap moved and the next load finished in one run. The screen had not been the liar. The path had.
When the screen is the job
The screen is the job when it comes out as a felt pad and the outside flap is already kicking. Clean it. Run the load. Do not pull the hose for that morning.
The screen is the wrong first story when it looks fine and the room gets hot, or the clothes come out hotter than dry, or the flap never moves. Then a longer cycle only cooks the same air.
A condenser dryer has no outside flap. Its job is a tank and a heat exchanger you can see if you open the right door. Empty the tank. If that box is furred, that is this machine’s hose. Do not treat a condenser like a vented box.
Should a long dry always mean a new machine? No. A heater that never gets hot is a machine. A crushed hose on a machine that still heats is not.
Feel the hose before you add a cycle
Run an empty heat cycle and watch the flap, or hold a hand near the vent if you can reach it safely from outside. No push of air means the path is the job. Unplug first if you move the box. Do not put a hand in a turning drum.
If the hose is clear and the flap kicks and the screen is clean, then look at the load size and the spin on the washer. A weak spin leaves water the dryer should not have to own. That is a washer morning, not a new dryer morning.
I still clean the screen. I do not treat that wipe as the whole path. The spare long cycle is off the Saturday habit. That is one cupboard and one brick flap. It does not prove every heavy towel is a hose. It does prove the second hour was the louder job. Feel the air leaving before you buy another forty minutes.
