After dinner the machine stops, the weather will not take a line, and the rack goes into the warmest room. The window stays shut so the heat does not leak. In the morning the cuffs are still heavy and the glass is wet. The first move looked careful. The room kept the water and handed it to the pane.
Indoor drying is not the mistake by itself. Wet cloth has to give water to the air. When that air can leave, the glass stays clear. When the room is sealed, the coldest surface in the room does the drying the rack only started. I noticed this on nights the rack shared the room I slept in. The clothes felt warm. The sill did not. A film sat on the glass before the second hour was over, and nothing about the setup had looked careless. It had looked like the only option.

Where the water goes
Air-drying is evaporation, not disappearance. After a normal spin, a household load still holds on the order of one to two liters of water. A weak spin leaves more. A faster spin leaves less. That leftover water becomes vapor over a few hours, and the first stretch is the wettest, while the fabric is still heavy. The rack is what people stare at. The transfer into the room is the actual event.
Once the vapor is in the air, it has only a few endings. It can leave through a cracked window, a small vent built into the frame, or a fan that ducts outside. A dehumidifier can wring the same air. Or the vapor stays until it touches a surface cold enough to turn it back into liquid. That last ending is why the mess shows up on glass, not in a puddle under the rack.
Indoor drying fogs windows when the room that holds the rack also holds the vapor. Wiping the pane feels like a fix and then fails, because the cloth removed droplets that had already formed. It did not stop the next hour of evaporation. Wet fabric, still air, and cold glass in the same stretch of night will put the film back.
Broken glass, or wet air?
The fair question is whether the window is the fault. I asked it looking at newer glass that filmed more than the old, leaky frames. Are tighter windows the defect? Should indoor drying stop for good? Both collapse once you sort three different wet-glass stories.
Droplets a finger can smear sit on the room side of the pane. That is indoor humidity meeting a cold surface. Mist trapped between two panes, where no cloth can reach, is a failed seal in an insulated unit. Water on the outdoor face is weather on the other side of the glass and is usually a different problem. If you can wipe it from inside the room, the unit is not announcing a break. The air in the room has more water than that glass can stay dry against.
New frames leak less on purpose. That saves heat and makes leftover vapor easier to see. The glass looks guilty because it is the first large surface to fall below the dew point — the temperature where that particular air cannot keep all of its water as vapor. Drafty old frames sometimes hid the same load by swapping moist indoor air for drier outdoor air without anyone planning it. The upgrade did not create the moisture. It stopped giving the moisture a quiet way out.
Closed curtains help the glass fail sooner. They hold a pocket of room air against a colder pane and keep that pocket from mixing with the warmer middle of the room. The laundry does not have to sit on the sill. It only has to raise the moisture in a room already sealed for the night.
Days the rack is harmless
The same wooden frame is fine on some days. The difference is not discipline. It is whether the vapor leaves before the glass hits dew point.
Indoor drying holds when outdoor air is drier than the room and a window can stay cracked for a short stretch. Cold winter air often carries less water even when it feels raw, so a brief swap can drop the moisture without turning the room into a balcony. It also holds when a dehumidifier runs in the same closed room as the rack, cleaning one volume of air rather than the hallway. A bathroom fan that vents outside can take a small load if the door stays nearly shut and the fan keeps running after the edges of the cloth feel dry.
Room size changes the same numbers. A studio absorbs those one-to-two liters less easily than a large open floor. Packed items change it too. Fabric pressed together stays wet in the middle, so the room stays humid longer, and longer humidity is what the pane uses. A second spin before hanging is not a ritual. It is less water entering the air in the first hour.
The rack fails the glass when it shares a bedroom overnight, when the only ventilation is an interior door, or when the air outside is already wetter than the room. Opening a window on a humid afternoon can add moisture while it feels like airing the place. Ventilation is not automatically correct. It is a comparison between indoor air and outdoor air.
Does that mean never dry inside? No. Plenty of homes have no outdoor line and no dryer that vents out of the building. The useful rule is smaller: dry inside only in a room that can dump moisture on purpose. A pretty rack in a sealed living room is a humidifier nobody switched on.
Why the heater backfires
A shirt on a heater looks like speed. Heat does pull water out of cloth faster. That is the trap. The water leaves the fabric sooner and enters the room sooner. If the window is still shut, the moisture problem is not shorter. It arrives earlier, in a colder room.
A covered radiator also stops warming the air the way it was built to. Warm air cannot rise off the metal, so the cloth gets a burst of heat while the rest of the room stays cooler. Cooler room air keeps the glass closer to the temperature where droplets form. People then raise the heat to chase the chill and push still more evaporation into the same closed volume.
If a heater is the only dry spot available, keep fabric off the face of the metal, leave the unit able to warm the air, and give the vapor a path out while the load is actually losing water. Skip that path and the cuffs dry while the sill goes wet.
Change the order, not the weather
The useful change is the order of operations, not a new gadget.
Hang the load in a room you can vent or dehumidify, not in the bedroom that will be sealed for sleep. Space the pieces so air can move between them. If the machine has a second spin, use it. Twenty or thirty minutes after the rack is up, touch the coldest pane with a dry finger. If it already films, the room is losing. Crack the window if the air outside is drier, start the fan that leaves the building, or run the dehumidifier then — not at midnight, after the load has already emptied itself into the air. Keep the rack off the glass and off the face of the radiator. Pull curtains back from the pane while the room is humid, even if the room looks unfinished for an evening.
Glass that only films on the coldest mornings is not proof that this week’s wash was wetter. The pane got colder, so the same indoor habit crossed a line milder nights had hidden. If the rack sits next to the window because that is where the heat is, wet cloth and cold glass are working as a pair. Distance decides whether vapor mixes into the room or hits dew point on the way past the sill.
I still dry clothes indoors. I do not treat a closed, heated room as a drying system. Heat only finishes the fabric. The room stays dry when the vapor has a way out, or when a dehumidifier wrings that air before the glass does the job instead.
